Diabetic macular edema is a severe form of diabetic retinopathy and laser surgery is usually the preferred treatment option.

Macular edema is a condition that occurs when fluids build up in the macula, the central area of the retina most critical for vision. The build-up of fluid causes the macula to swell, disrupting its normal shape. This results in damaged vision.

Symptoms of Macular Edema

  • Decreased vision
  • Distortion of images
  • Difficulty reading
  • Missing areas of vision
  • Changes in contrast sensitivity

If any of these symptoms occur, speak with Dr Stanfield immediately.
